Description
In 1844 the 33rd Congress appropriated funds for the building of the steam frigate U.S.S. Merrimack. The Merrimack performed minor duty through most of her career, finally ending up in the Norfolk Navy Yard. As 2,000 Confederates marched on the Navy yard the decision was made to burn the ship rather than have it fall to the enemy. Even though the superstructure was destroyed the hull remained in good shape, the South began transforming the Merrimack into the Ironclad C.S.S. Virginia. News of the conversion traveled fast as the Virginia scored an impressive list of victories against all wooden boats who stood in her way. The Union response was the U.S.S. Monitor. Designed specifically as an Ironclad, the Monitor is considered a masterpiece of naval engineering. On March 9, 1862 the Monitor and the Virginia met in a classic Naval engagement at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Who won? Nobody. Both Ironclads proved too durable for the other, and both left the battle with minor damage. When you purchase Dumas kit #1236 you get two kits in one. You receive all the cleanly die cut wood parts and the embossed plastic rivet details, as well as the photo etched sheet and cast metal detail to build the Monitor. In the same kit you will get a preformed ABS hull, superstructure die cuts, and tons of detail pieces, including photo etched railings, cast guns and anchors. Both kits are completely radio controllable so you too can relive Civil War history. Always look to Dumas for the best in historic models.
